The Gaian Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to research and education that promotes a more peaceful, just, participatory and ecologically-conscious society.

VISION

We envision a global society in which human beings live with a sense of universal responsibility, identifying themselves with the whole Earth community as well as their local communities. The "sense of universal responsibility" can be cultivated when we live "with reverence for the mystery of being, gratitude for the gift of life and humility regarding the human place in nature" (Earth Charter).

MISSION

Our mission is to explore ecologically informed human development opportunities through integrative science, learning communities and adaptive governance systems. Ecologically informed human development is about being more, and not having more or doing more. This is one of the major challenges of our time, given that the current process of economic globalization is largely motivated by an insatiable desire on the part of hegemonic groups to compulsively subordinate their sense of being to the existential dimensions of having and doing.
